this hour coming up. happening now day two of a huge gun show is about to get under way at the cal palace. the event comes in amist of a contention gun control debate. alex savidge is live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the organizers of this event tells ktvu he's never seen crowds this big. he expects the same thing here today at the cal palace as this event continues. day two. folks already lining up this morning to get into the cross roads of the west gun show. the doors open here at 9:00 this morning. this was the scene yesterday as hundreds of people turned out. gun enthusiasts are motivated to buy because they are worried aboutish creased gun -- about increased fun control measures. later on this week the vice president will release a series of recommendations to reduce

gun violence including universal background checks. >> politicians are looking to piggy back on this event to further impede the rights of the american people. second amendment rights and their legal and lawful gun ownership. these people are voting by coming out. >> reporter: now because california has a ten-day waiting period for gun sales you won't see anybody leaving the show with the new firearms. people were stocking up on ammunition here. there is no limit on the number of bullets someone can buy. coming up how one bay area lawmaker is taking aim at ammunition sales trying to tighten the rules and how that proposal is driving business at gun shows like this one.

for now we are live in daly city. >> that gun show comes as marin county gets ready for its first buy back. they will also collect violent video games and if there is money left they will pay $5-$10 for those. the program is not limited to marin county residents. people who live in san francisco, sonoma, and contra costa counties can also participate. the buy back is on tuesday. here's a look at the collection sites. in other news the 49ers new quarterback has put them back in the nfc championship. >> second down and fourth. kaepernick fooled everybody. collin kaepernick what a game. >> that pretty much sums it up. he had an amazing game. he ran for 181 yards last night at candle stick. setting a record for an nfl

in the end i pulled it out. >> fans got a little too rowdy. san francisco police gave us a run down of unruly fans. there were two dui arrests physical lowing the game. and police arrested two people for breaking into a car. and more than 60 people needed medical help. the 49ers will find out today if they will host seattle or will have to travel to atlanta. the fox pregame show begins at 9:00 a.m.. then stay tuned for the ot at 1:00 p.m.. flu could be wide spread in california in a week. one bay area hospital is seeing an increase in cases. kizer perm then they energy rooms are packed from patients suffering from both flu and

rsv. hospital workers are giving out masks try to stop the spread of germs. >> they said it's important you put these on because the flu is so wide spread right now. health officials say there is still time to get a flu shot. some bay area pharmacies are offering free vaccines for children through the end of the month. refusing to get a flu shot has caused some hospital workers their job. at least 15 nurses and hospital staff nation-wide have been fired in the last two months for refusing to get the vaccine. some say they have allergies and others claim religious objections. health care workers in san francisco are required to get a flu shot or wear a mask. in new york governor andrew has declare claireed a public health emergency because of the flu. that comes after 25,000 cases of flu were reported in that

state. 20 children nation-wide have died of the flu. including two children in new york state. time is 7:07. another outbreak of the nora virus has hit the bay area. dozens of students from burton valley elementary school have fallen ill. they spent the weekend cleaning and disinfecting the campus. it comes after two elderly people died over the holidays. your time is 7:07. and just when i think it can't get any colder i wake up and the next morning it is. >> it is a little bit colder. i know you warned us. when i walked outside today i had to scrape all the windshields. >> you know it's cold when your car starts talking to you. it's cold out there this morning in napa. the airport tying a record for

low temperatures. we're talking low to mid 20s in some areas. giving you a live look there. it's a beautiful start to the day. mostly clear skies. official sunrise right about 7:20, 7:25 so it's already on the way. nice golden hugh there. a little bit of patchy fog in santa rosa. because it's so cold, freezing fog definitely a possibility. that means super cool, cool drops that if it does land on anything that is frozen, any roadways or bridges or anything like that, it could ice up a little bit. take it easy. mid 20s in napa. 24 santa rosa. tying a record here. 27 concord. 25 in livermore. 29 for you san jose. waking up below freezing you're included in the freeze warning. alistening the peninsula 39 san francisco. this looks to be the warmer spot. san francisco is holding on to 40 degrees up until a half hour or 45 minutes ago. 33 in redwood city. mountain view and palo alto you can bet you are freezing.

frost advisory for the bay area lasting until 8:00 this morning. the freeze warning for our inland locations north, east, and south as i showed you a moment ago looking at and filling the wide-spread 20s. pacific satellite view not a lot of change going on. still within this pattern. the north westerly and northerly flow remains over the state. we have a trough to the east. ridge of high pressure to the west. in fact, it is so -- it goes way up toward alaska. this ridge is eventually going to nudge our way. going to bring our temperatures up. but we will remain with this cold spell. especially for the overnight hours. in a nutshell we are mostly clear. freezing this morning. our afternoon a near repeat of what we felt yesterday. cool and dry in our extended forecast. a gradual warmup as we get into tuesday and wednesday. 49-degrees expected this afternoon in vallejo. low 50s san francisco. upper 40s for concord.

hayward you are looking at upper 40s. 48 degrees for the afternoon. 51 san jose. low 50s in santa cruz. i was out doing shopping a lot of people outdoors. doesn't feel so bad once we get into the afternoon. as we get into monday tomorrow morning going to be just as cold as we get off to work. the kids off to school. be prepared for that. afternoon highs nudging upwards tuesday, wednesday into the 60s at this point. we'll leave in that nice little warming trend all the way through thursday. overnight lows will gradually bump up as well to near freezing by wednesday and into the low to mid 30s on thursday. today marks the first anniversary of the costa concordia cruise ship disaster. survivors of -- there will also be a moment of silence at the

good morning, to you. a live look forward as far as. mostly clear and cold if you will be outdoors early this morning. maybe consider the thermals. overnight news one person was killed and three others were hurt in a roll over crash in napa county. officials say the single car crash happened on wild horse valley road around 1:40 this morning. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. three others were taken to the hospital. the pilot of a small plane is lucky to have escaped injury after making a hard landing in san mateo county. the single engine aircraft landed yesterday without its landing gear down. the 56-year-old pilot was

flying to san carlos. the airport briefly closed as they moved that plane off the runway. an autopsy will be performed on a man found dead in sonoma county. workers found the body of 30- year-old lou luis gomez. sheriffs deputies says he was a transient and could have climbed in the recycling bin to get out of the cold. just hours ago an egyptian court granted an appeal. the former leader of egypt ruled for 30 years until protestors demanded more freedomming and reforms drove him from office. bill clinton was in haiti to commemorate three years after that deadly quake. he attended a memorial.

the country is still recovering as more than 350,000 people are displaced from their homes and still living in camps. former president george h.w. bush might be released from the hospital soon. his son former florida governor jeb bush said he may go home tomorrow. the president was admitted to methodist hospital for bronchitist in november and put in intensive care for a fever. a san diego police officer shot and injured a man in a movie theater. it happened yesterday afternoon in caramel mountain ranch. the suspects girlfriend called police and said her boyfriend had threatened her with a gun. police say the suspect ran into the movie neater to try to hide but was found and confronted by police. >> they checked the back door that was locked but they didn't talk to us. i knew that wasn't a good sign. and then all of a sudden i heard two shots and i went to

the floor. >> officers say they shot the suspect after he reached for a gun. the theater was evacuated and no one else was hurt. we're learning more about the victim and gunman in last week's school shooting near bakersfield. victim bo cleveland is a junior. he is in a medically induced coma in critical and stable condition. they will announce charges against oliver tomorrow. internet activist and cofounder of san francisco based sports died he committed suicide in his apartment yesterday. he was considered an internet prodigy who at 14 years old --

he was 26 years old. oracle says a fix for a security flaw in its popular java software will be available in the new future. the announcement comes after the department of homeland security took the up usual step of recommending computer users uninstall the software. it appears hackers have been exploiting a flaw and installing malicious programs. the glitch only effects java 7 software. meg whitman made more than $15 million during her first full year as ceo of hewlett pack pack packard. she took over in september of 2011. the treasury department says it will not be minting a special trillion dollar coin to get around the debt.

the treasury department however says the law does not allow it to make a coin for that purpose. san jose sharks will be back at practice after the lockout is over. attorneys completed an official memo of understanding between players and owners last night. teams will get six days of practice before the 48 game season begins next saturday. here's a look at the shark schedule. the team will start off in calgary next sunday the 20th. then they play in ed monoton. the last game of the regular season will be saturday april 27th in los angeles. tickets for individual games go on sale on wednesday. mayor of sacramento says he can raise the money needed to keep the kings from moving to seattle. kevin johnson told usa today he's working with billionaires ron burke l and mark to raise

$425 to $450 million. this comes after a seattle based group led by steve bomber and steve hanson are trying to buy the kings. it could be a big night for steven spielberg at the golden globe. spielberg lincoln is nominated for seven golden globes. ben affleck argo are both nominated for five awards. comedians tina fey and amy will host the ceremony. your new miss america is miss new york. >> drew: there she is miss new york has won the title of miss america. 23-year-old mallory hagan took top honors in the beauty pageant last night after tap dancing to james brown and answered the question about whether armed guards belong in

welcome back to mornings on 2. a new york city woman is recovering after falling down a vault. officials say the woman was waiting for a bus on the upper east side when the sidewalk collapsed and she fell seven feet down a vault. she was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition. firefighters say weather and age may have weakened the

sidewalk. some super storm sandy victims have been asked to leave their hotel because of a preplanned convention. the ocean port spa and resort was double booked this weekend for a crab booking convention. dozens of people were staying at their home because of their homes were destroyed by sandy were asked to leave. >> we're at the mercy of their accommodation. >> i don't think it's the hotel. i think it's just really at the root of fema. >> fema spokesperson responded saying no one should be on the streets or in the cars we have alternative hotels. the managers say sandy can return after the convention is over. we haven't seen much snow in the sierra over the past few days but man it has been cold.

this is interstate 80 heading up to the tahoe area. overnight temperatures got down to negative six degrees. and today the high is only expected to get up to a balmy 28. drivers are being encouraged to prepare for black ice because of the freezing temperatures. if you are heading up to tahoe to do skiing there is a free service. a ski shuttle is taking visitors who visit the area to nine north lake tahoe results. the buses run through the weekend and designed to reduce travel headaches and get skiers and snow borders out of their cars. >> that looks like fun. when you go to work this morning all of us are like this. so cold. >> yeah it's freezing. >> rosemary when will it get warmer? >> imagine if work was outdoors. we would be miserable. if you are going to brave the cold to get out and get the fresh fruits and veggies maybe going to the farmers market, bundle up with the frost and

freeze advisories will last until 8:00. the shade of blue is the advisories. the shade of purple is the freeze warning for areas near santa rosa, novato and san rafael. this is a hard freeze warning in areas like vallejo and benicia and over fairfield. upper 20s and low 30s for you. if i scoot in over toward lafayette and san ramon, mid 20s for you this morning. how about the peninsula? san mateo low 30s. 27 degrees in palo alto. upper 20s to low 30s from san jose down into gilroy. forecasted highs for today upper 40s and low 50s. 57 san francisco. we remain in this trend. we will see just a very slight warm up for each passing day. tomorrow morning will be just as bad as this morning. as we get into tuesday and

crowds and record breaking numbers get in line at a local gun show. why they say they need to stock up on their arsenals right now. i'm brian flores. >> and i'm claudine wong. the huge line of people surprised even the event organizers. alex savidge joins us live from daly city for more on day two own the reason behind -- day two and the reason behind the rush. >> reporter: large number of people showing up here at the gun show. many organizers believe it's because people are concerned about new restrictions on gun sales moving forward. we are here at the cal palace

where this event has been going on yesterday and throughout the weekend. you can see this morning already people are lined up to get inside. this is what things looked like here yesterday as hundreds of people turned out to check out the guns and ammunition up for sale. the organizers say gun enthusiasts are motivated to buy because they are worried about increased gun control measures being put into place soon following last months school massacre. there are a number of proposals right now at both the federal and state level. in fact just this past week east bay assemblywomanner nancy skinner announced a new bill at particularly regulating the sale of ammunition. it would create a justice department of registry of ammunition purchases. many gun owners are paying attention. >> they are concerned going forward about their second amendment rights. they are considered about -- concerned about the proposed ammunition regulation bill.

joining with state ace cross the country to mark national amber alert awareness day. more than 200 amber alerts have been issued since it went into effect in 2002. the emergency message system was created in 1996 after nine- year-old amber was abducted and later found murdered. more than 600 children have been safely recovered since its inception. overnight news police are searching for suspects in the shooting of two people including an elderly woman. police were called to a home on alemany boulevard around 10:00 last night. both victims were take ton the -- taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. police in san jose have arrested the eighth and final suspect in the killing of a teen. 31-year-old joe was taken into custody on thursday in morgan hill. they say he and seven others punched and kicked reyes and

his holder brother on a basketball court. reyes' brother survived. oakland police are trying to prevent more gun violence after several shootings this weekend. two men and one woman are the latest victims. they were shot on harmon avenue around 12:45 yesterday afternoon. police say their injuries are nonlife threatening. it happened just one day after four people were shot and killed in separate shootings. three men and a 17-year-old boy were shot during a six hour period. police say the shootings are linked to ongoing feuds between several groups in the city. the violence brought out community outreach member who have a message for young people. >> they should look at this and know that no bullet has a name on it. >> so far no arrests have been made in any of the shootings. this year there have been six homicides in the city. it could be several more days before the oakland unified school district headquarters reopens. the building flooded last week after someone accidentally left

a faucet running in a custodian's closet. it caused damage to the building and some of the equipment inside. time now is 7:38. it's just cold out there today. let's go to rosemary to see when it's going to warm up. i think it will be wednesday i guess. >> yes. we're looking at a very slow warming trend as we get into the business week. for today temperatures colder than where we were yesterday by several degrees this morning. and then for the afternoon it will feel just as nice. bring along the winter coat and you should be fine. unless you have somewhere you need to be maybe hold off a couple hours until we begin to thaw out. it is a beautiful start though giving you a live look there over the bay area. we've got blue skies. we have rolling hills and they are green. haven't seen a lot of rain in january. one, two, or three days of a few light showers that has really been it for the month of january. as we know, november and december very wet. so the big chill is on this

morning. we are anywhere from 3-6-7 degrees colder than where we were 24 hours ago. the lows in the 20s. low 20s along the valley floor where that coldest air has settled in and been there for several hours. a watch and a warning continue for areas along the bay as well as our inland areas until 8:00 this morning in the valley we're looking at temperatures in the 20s. mid even low 20s over parts of the north bay. right now concord 27. 26 in areas around livermore. 29 in san jose. so north, east, and south bay valley locations with the freeze warning for the next 20 minutes or so. around the bay with exception of san francisco the frost advisory until 8:00 this morning. where we're seeing wide spread 30s. 34 in oakland. 32 in hayward. 33 mountain view. and pockets in the upper 20s. palo alto and stanford in the 20s. as we head into the north bay this is where we are seeing some of our coldest weather

settle in. 24 santa rosa. 25 in novato. 25 in napa. a little bit earlier i was looking at low 20s. the wind not helping us out. calm to very light. nothing to help stir that cold air that has stuck to the valley floor. we eventually will warm up now that the sun has been up for 20 minutes or so. it will take an hour but this is the powder we have been watching for the last few days. it remains. we have this ridge over the pacific. we have a trough off to the east. for today a lot like yesterday once we get past these cold, cold temps we'll be in the upper 40s to low 50s for the afternoon. 50 for berkeley. 50 san francisco. 49 for hayward. 49 in antioch. south bay areas looking at 51 for san jose. 50 morgan hill. 52 for santa cruz. there is your extended forecast tomorrow morning a lot of us will be out the door early including the little ones. it will be just as cold. wide spread 20s to low 30s

around the inland areas and into the bay. temperatures will warm into the low to mid 50s by tomorrow. and then that warming trend we were talking about a moment ago low 60s in the forecast for the afternoons tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. if you have to be out this morning i will show you just when i expect the temperatures to warm up. back to you. 2013 may be off to a frigid start but 2012 was off to a hot record. the average temperature for the country was just above 55 degrees last year and that is one degree higher than the previous record set back in 1998. the report also found that 2012 was the 15th driest year recorded. coming up the plans range from objections to sobering centers. why san francisco is trying to figure out how to deal with homelessness and alcohol abuse. what some angry residents

were killed. all three worked for a utah base celtic bank. the crash happened in heavy fog. french troops are moving in toe mall lee after a french pilot was killed in a helicopter raid. the troops left from chad to help push back troops. now france is on the alert of a terrorist attack. protestors plan to mark the 11th anniversary of the guantanamo bay detention camp. they plan to read the names of the 166 prisoners being held at that prison. some people people are also planning to wear orange jump suits. similar events will be held in washington, d.c. and outside the cia headquarters in very. vallejo residents demanded more credibility after a series of officer involved shootings.

the meeting comes after ten officer involved shootings. they are looking to improve steps with the community. >> it creates angst in the community. i think this is an opportunity to open that dialogue to keep the communication going and explain what the procedures are. how we handle the investigations. >> yesterday's meeting was held in the same neighborhood where march row romero was shot and killed in his car. members of his family attended that meeting. alameda county sheriffs deputies are continuing to search for an inmate that escaped from custody on friday. 31-year-old anthony how's quince managed to slip out of his restraints while he was being transported to a doctors appointment. he was in jail on armed robbery

charges. san francisco is pitching new ways to help homeless alcoholics. one is to inject volunteers with a drug that may reduce their cravings. other plans include a so-called wet house where they continue to drink in a service that picks homeless people up and takes them to a sobering center. the idea comes after they threat a plan. researchers are trying to figure out how to prevent concussions on the football field. john takes a look at the technology already in the works to better pretect athletes of -- protect athletes of all ages and levels. >> reporter: just how violent or risky is this? this is stanford's rose bowl win. cardinal players wore high-tech motion mouth guards. >> i hope it's a game changer. i've said to myself i won't allow my kids to play the sport

alex. >> reporter: people are turning out in record numbers. according to the man in charge of this event. this is the cross roads of the west gun show. it take place here at the cal palace. setup is well under way this morning. folks from the nra setting up a tent here. beyond that you can see vendors and members of the public lined up to get inside. the doors open shortly. i want to show you what the scene looked like yesterday as hundreds checked out the gun and ammunition. organizers believe gun enthusiast are more than motivated to buy. they are worried about increased gun control measures being put into place. following last months school massacre. later on this week the vice president will release a series of recommendations to reduce gun violence including universal background checks and a ban on high capacity magazines. the organizer here didn't realize how much of an impact new gun control proposals would have. >> we knew it would be busy but we had no idea that we'd have

for other guns. they will collect violent video games and if there is any money left they will pay $5-$10 for those. the buy back is on tuesday. here's a look at the collection sites. they are at police headquarters in novato, san rafael, and lark spur. one state will implement a similar program. but this is for kids to sell back their video games. coming up we'll tell you why organizers say they will help you get violent video games off the street and hopefully have an impact on children. in overnight news one person was killed and three others were hurt in a roll over crash in napa county early this morning. it happened around 1:40 this morning. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. three others were take ton the hospital -- were taken to the hospital.

the two men killed in this crash yesterday morning on 880 in san jose have been identified. the santa clara county medical examiners office died when their chevy cobalt hit a bank. chp believe the driver were intoxicated and lost control. also in overnight news police are searching for suspects in the shooting of two people including an elderly woman. police were called to a home on alemany boulevard last night. when they arrived they found an 80-year-old woman and 50-year- old man with gunshot wounds. both victims were take ton the hospital and expect -- taken to the hospital and expected to survive. flu could be wide spread in hospitals in one week. emergency rooms are packed with patients suffering from both the flu and rsv. it's a respiratory virus that is aggravated by the cold weather. hospital workers are giving out

masks to try to stop the spread of germs. >> they said it's important you put this on because the flu is so wide spread right now. >> health officials say there is still time to get a flu shot which is expected to be effective against the flu strains that are circulating this year. some bay area pharmacies are offering free vaccines for children through the end of the month. refusing to get a flu shot has caused hospital workers their jobs. at least 15 nurses and other hospital staff nation-wide have been fired in the last two months for refusing to get the vaccine. some workers say they have allergies to the flu vaccine and others claim religious objectives. health care workers are required to get a flu shot or wear a mask and we'll have much more on the flu outbreak in a live report coming up at 8:40. time is 8:09. new this morning the san jose sharks begin training camp today now that the nhl lockout is over. attorneys completed an official

the avalanche was somehow triggered. the man was able to locate her in the show and rescue her. she was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition. authorities say the avalanche gear she was carrying helped save her life. we're following developing news from mountain view. firefighters on the scene of a fire at a mobile home park. that fire started 40 minutes ago near grant road. a dispatcher tells us the fire was contained to only one home and the person inside was able to get out without any injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. today marks the first anniversary of the costa concordia cruise ship disaster. survivors are attending a day long commemoration. memorials will be unvailed for the 32 victims. there will also be a moment of silence at the exact moment the cruise ship struck the reef. >> i couldn't sleep.

specials by giants third baseman. it's being televised on the com cast hometown network at 8:00 p.m.. donations will be accepted throughout the broadcast. he was attacked and severely injured at dodger stadium back in 2011. two men and one woman are the latest victims. they were shot on harmon avenue around 12:45 yesterday afternoon. police say their injuries are not life threatening. it happened just one day after four people were shot and killed in separate shootings. three men and a 17-year-old boy were shot during a six hour period. police say the shootings are linked to ongoing feuds between several groups in the stay. the violent brought out community outreach members who have a message for young people. >> they should look at this and know that no bullet has a name on it. >> no arrests have been made in any of the shootings. so far this year there has been six homicides in the city.

police in san jose have arrested the eighth and final suspect in a beating death of a 14-year-old boy. he was beaten to death on april 27th last year at roosevelt park. 31-year-old joe was taken into custody an thursday in morgan hill. they say he and seven others punched and kicked reyes and his older brother on a basketball court. reyes' brother survived. let's go to our top story. big crowds are heading to the big gun show in daly city. alex savidge is joining us live from the cal palace. what are organizers telling you about this event? >> reporter: the man in charge of the cross roads tells ktvu already this weekend there have been record setting crowds here at the event. he believes that many people are worried about new restrictions being put on gun sales. let me show you the scene here. in the parking lot at the cal palace this morning already a long line of people waiting to get tickets. the doors open up at 9:00 this morning.

i want to show you what things looked like yesterday here. ammunition all up for sale. the organizers believe gun enthusiast are more motivated than ever to buy. they are concerned about increased gun control measures that could be put into place soon. later on this week the vice president will look at a series of recommendations and release a series of recommendations to reduce gun violence and that could include universal background checks and a ban on the high capacity magazines. the organizer of this gun show tells ktvu people are anticipating the new gun control measures. >> the politicians are attempting to piggy back on this tragedy, series of events to further impede the rights of the american people. the second amendment rights and legal and lawful gun ownership. these people are voting by coming out.

good morning, to you. and a view there of mt. diablo this morning. it's 29 degrees but with the windchill at mt. diablo 16 degrees right now. the national transportation safety board is investigating a small plane crash in texas that killed all three people aboard. the piper pa46 had just taken off from an airport near paris, texas yesterday morning when it crashed into a field. the pilot and two other men were killed. all three worked for utah based celtic bank. the faa says the crash happened in heavy fog. the pilot of a small plane is lucky to have escaped injury after making a hard landing in san mateo county. sheriffs officials say the single engine aircraft landed at san carlos airport yesterday without its landing deer down. he was flying to san carlos. the airport closed briefly

while they removed the plane off the runway. an autopsy will be performed after a man found dead. they found the body of 30-year- old luis gomez diaz. authorities don't know how he died but it may have been a accident. it was a transient and could have climbed into a recycling bin to get out of the cold. victim bo cleveland is a 16- year-old junior at taft union high school. he's in a medically induced coma in critical but stable condition. suspect brian oliver also 16 allegedly shot cleveland with a shotgun in science class on thursday. they will announce charges against oliver tomorrow morning. police say a body found in modesto is a missing woman with ties to the bay area. the coroner office has identified a body found under a modesto bridge as 28-year-old

san francisco is pitching new ways to help homeless alcoholics. one is to inject volunteers with a drug that may reduce their cravings. other plans include a so-called wet house where they can continue to drink and a service that picks homeless people up and stakes them to a sobering center. the ideas come after a state appeals court flew out a plan to bill homeless men who did not appear in court. the developer says the apartments vowel use of the golden gate bridge a finance center and rooftop gardens. preservationists -- those buildings include the old hinges department store which now houses the cinemas. researchers at stanford university are working to prevention con cushions on the football field. for the past two years the schools football team has been wearing high-tech mouth gourds that can sense motion and record impacts.
